Air Guitar Nation (2006)

If your bedroom has become too small a stage for your air guitar antics, take inspiration from the competitors featured here as they battle their way from the inaugural U.S. Air Guitar Championship to the world championship in Oulu, Finland. Along the way, filmmaker Alexandra Lipsitz documents the fierce rivalries that develop as would-be rock legends vie for top honors in technical accuracy, stage presence and "airness.

This is an inspirational film, in the sense that it inspired me to want to play air guitar. Everyone?s done it, so why not make a worldwide competition out of it? In this film we meet the best of the best at pretending to play an invisible instrument. Needless to say, some of them are weird. But the film is fun and intriguing and there?s never really a dull moment, especially if you can appreciate some first-rate beautifully hardcore air-guitaring. Anyway, why someone wouldn?t want to watch a documentary about air guitar is beyond me, so go rent it now!

It makes you want to open your bedroom door and turn the music up when you practice air guitar. Make Air not War.

I must admit that when I heard about this film I questioned whether a film about a bunch of metal-heads pretending to play guitar could possibly be worthwhile. I forgot the golden rule, guys - 'you can make a documentary about anything as long as you make it well'. The best thing about the film is that the makers treat the subject with the same mix between amusement and seriousness as the competitors. You end up both caring about the fate of the contestants, marvelling at their abilities all while laughing at the ridiculousness of grown adults pretending to play guitar on a stage in front of hundreds of people. The serious ideological impetus behind the World Championships founding in Sweden comes as a surprise and really endeared me to the whole idea. Afterall, as the Finnish organisers said, you can't hold both a gun AND an air guitar ar the same time.
