Aftersun is a beautiful film, albeit one with too many endings, brimming with inner life and creativity, and worthy of comparison to Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher and other debuts of that ilk.

"When you were 11, what did you think you would be doing now?" A perfect depiction of depression, failure, memories and love. Parents are complex, flawed creatures who you can never really know until one day you look at them and the memories you’ve collected with them and realize all the tiniest details of it built who you are now, and how you aren’t as different from them as you’d maybe led yourself to believe.

7.3 Did you know one of the biggest causes of suicide within men is losing their family from divorce? Well, this film certainty does. The film’s cinematography is easily the highlight and it adds the needed tension to the scenes that would be theoretically calming. Otherwise, it’s a good film that tells a chilling simple simple story. It’s certainty not a masterpiece though.

'Aftersun' slowly unravels the pain under an apparent healthy father/daughter relationship. Charlotte Wells' extremely well-crafted debut gives no clear answers about what is troubling these characters, but the way it captures the fleeting moments of joy and sorrow is rewarding enough. Paul Mescal shines as a loving yet tormented father, and Frankie Corio is a magnificent revelation; their chemistry together is off the charts. Wells' visual resources are most impressive. The way she puts together the story feels like actual memories fused together with nightmarish thoughts, where the key to what's happening lies. But the best part is that it's up to everyone to decide what to make of it. And this is what sets apart great films from common ones; they make you feel, remember and think and the same time. 'Aftersun' is a masterpiece about raw emotions and the moments we wish were never gone.

I thought this movie was really powerful. The father and daughter relationship between Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio's character is so credible I didn't think for a second the lines written were fictional. I don't think I have seen a movie that got me invested into the characters this much in a long time. Mescal and Corio are absolutely sensational in the film and I think both of them deserve oscar nominations. There were certain sequences that made me well up even if it wasn't a big tearjerking scene. It was just because of how well the performances and the camera subtly conveyed the emotions of the characters. The strangely detached relationship of father and daughter gave the film a sense of melancholy that really effected me. The film also looked gorgeous and everything leaped off the screen. I am so glad I got to see this in theaters. For me, it's my favorite film of 2022.
