A haunting portrait of the long term effects of abuse from one of the most under-appreciated directors.

The mystery subplot keeps the film from being a true masterpiece but overall its still very strong with Nick Nolte, James Coburn, Willem Dafoe, and Sissy Spacek all turning in fantastic performances. Nolte especially is strong who is at his best in this role.

Affliction is an emotionally ragged film that constantly subverts the conventions of the two genres, murder mystery and family drama, it straddles. Many people have criticized the voiceovers, particularly in the final sequence, but if one considers that the narrator might not be reliable, this only enhances the film's devastating effects. No manipulation, no strong directorial presence, simply a fantastic story portrayed by actors who so inhabit their roles that what they do can hardly be called acting.

Nolte is revelatory as Wade Whitehouse... shrapneled son of an abusive, angry, alcoholic James Coburn. The oppresive wintery habitat adds nothing but evidence for the milieu. Stark, but all there.

Una peli sustentada por muy buenas actuaciones. La relación de un padre con su hijo y la solución a un crimen
