Affliction is an emotionally ragged film that constantly subverts the conventions of the two genres, murder mystery and family drama, it straddles. Many people have criticized the voiceovers, particularly in the final sequence, but if one considers that the narrator might not be reliable, this only enhances the film's devastating effects. No manipulation, no strong directorial presence, simply a fantastic story portrayed by actors who so inhabit their roles that what they do can hardly be called acting.

Top-notch performances by Nick Nolte and James Coburn in this chilling and bleak tale of the ways in which psychological abuse can trickle down through family relationships. This movie is all about emotional isolation. Watch it on a dark, snowy winter night for optimal effect. The wife and I watch this one at least annually, preferably during a deep winter snowfall.

Well acted by Nolte and Coburn, Schrader's strongest film in years is a powerful reverie on family curse, how incontrollable anger, drinking, and violence almost inevitably pass on from one generation to the next.

This is a tragic story. In trying to get out of his father's 'house', Wade ends up in it. This movie is about parental abuse and how difficult it is to get out of the cycle of repeating it. I found Nolte and Coburn fabulous in this movie.
