Although almost everything in this film is fantastic, such as the cinematography and music. In the end everything is there to support its actors. The film deals with one mans obsession that he hopes will change his life, only to find out it is turning him into his greatest fear. The setting of the isolated, snow filled town, perfectly represents the nature of the cold inhabitants. Fantastical.

A great film..not necessarily for Nolte who was nonetheless very good but for James Coburn. This was the first time for me seeing Coburn do a role other than on those cheesy "How to Win at Slots" videos. He didn't stretch himself as an actor in those videos by the way.

The casting, performances and writing are all perfect. The character Nolte plays is perfectly tailored to his style of acting and it's jaw dropping to watch. Coburn's performance is so many big words i don't know. He's such an unpleasant character, just full of bitterness and wants to do nothing but dominate everyone even his own family! Schrader's script is truly something to behold here. The characters in his movies don't mirror my own life at all but he does such a brilliant job of making every character easy to relate to that they stay with me long after i've seen them and Affliction is no exception.
