A Sinner in Mecca (2015)

For a gay filmmaker, filming in Saudi Arabia presents two serious challenges: filming is forbidden in the country and homosexuality is punishable by death. For filmmaker Parvez Sharma, however, these were risks he had to assume as he embarked on his Hajj pilgrimage, a journey considered the greatest accomplishment and aspiration within Islam, his religion. On his journey Parvez aims to look beyond 21st-century Islam's crises of religious extremism, commercialism and sectarian battles. He brings back the story of the religion like it has never been told before, having endured the biggest jihad there is: the struggle with the self.

A film that attempts to tell an important story - and one so rarely addressed in film and mainstream culture that it should be celebrated for its existence. Where A Sinner In Mecca fails is in its determination to achieve its singular aim. The film is at times touching, and sometimes borders on poigniancy, but struggles with the heavy handed delivery of its core message. In relying too much on Western narratives of Islam as shorthand its depiction of the world filmmaker Pavez Sharma inhabits is shallow and loses much of the nuance and context that a truly incredible film could have achieved.

It touches on a number of the central conflicts in contemporary Islam (and in religion more widely) but does so in a way that invites reflection rather than getting people's backs up.

Sensationalizing every moment of his hajj (pilgrimage) while calling attention to his devotion, the helmer comes across as far too pleased with himself, though countering the demonization of Islam is a necessary goal.

The result is a fascinating look at a city off-limits to non-Muslims.

Mr. Sharma has created a swirling, fascinating travelogue and a stirring celebration of devotion.
