A Letter to Elia (2010)

Martin Scorsese reflects on the profound influence of director Elia Kazan, tracing his artistic journey from the Group Theatre to Hollywood success and the controversies of the blacklist era. Co-directed with Kent Jones, the film combines interviews and clips from Kazan's classics—On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, and America, America—to portray him as a deeply personal filmmaker within an often impersonal industry.

Scorsese provides a mix between analysis of the films and a telling of his personal relationship to the films. Though most of the very short documentary seems like a re-telling of East of Eden, there are some heartfelt moments and interesting tidbits sprinkled throughout.

A loving tribute to Kazan, and especially powerful because of Scorsese's close, personal connection to the pictures, if not the man.

Saw this as a part of the Sydney Film festival. This is a very candid, personal look at the influence of one of cinema's great directors on another great director. Very well told and concise. Goes into alot of Kazan's films particulary - On the waterfront, east of eden, a tree groes in brooklyn and america america. I'm a sucker for documentaries about film and particulary film directors.

A deeply personal film in which Martin Scorsese, who co-directed and co-wrote, speaks at loving length about the impact that Kazan's films had on him.

Ethan Alter 28 Sep 2010

Scorsese offers a stirring analysis of Kazan's artistry while also describing in heartfelt terms how these stories affected him as a nascent movie lover.
