A Faster Horse (2015)

David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi) tackles another venerable, beloved, and long-standing institution: the Mustang, crown jewel of the Ford fleet. Only this institution is in turmoil. As the fiftieth anniversary of the Mustang approaches and the car industry struggles through the deepest trough of the financial crisis, Ford launches a redesign. Now the jobs of workers at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant, the expectations of the thousands of Mustang devotees, and the livelihood of the city of Detroit are all placed squarely on the shoulders of Dave Pericak. As chief program engineer, he will guide the 2015 Mustang from assembly floor to showroom—if only he can get that vibration out of the steering wheel.

A Faster Horse is a well done documentary that captures the history, the aura and the emotional connection people have with arguably the most iconic and recognizable vehicles in America. It provides an in depth look into the design of the 2015 model and the pressures faced by the design team to meet and exceed the expectations of all that love the Mustang. If you love or own a Mustang, you'll appreciate this documentary. And even if you don't, you just might after watching this.

The whole package, with its bizarre fondness for slow motion, feels correspondingly sluggish. All the components are here, but A Faster Horse cries out for more dynamic performance.

The tidbits we learn are wrapped in an unabashedly promotional tone that overestimates the global emotional attachment to this car’s muscular mythos. It’s difficult to believe that this tribute comes from the director who showed such delicacy in his appreciation of Jiro Ono’s art.

Mustang fanatics will be thrilled by the level of access that Ford provided the filmmakers to shoot at the company’s Dearborn, Mich., headquarters and interview the Mustang design team headed by chief engineer Dave Pericak. Even so, it may be difficult to escape a sense that the film sometimes plays like an extended product promo.

Can't say I'm a fan of Fords all that much, but I'd love to own a classic 60s or 70s Mustang someday. A cool look into designing a new version of the iconic muscle car, and the technical and cultural hurdles that come with it. Watched at home in Netflix, March 27, 2016.
