49 Up (2006)

49 Up is the seventh film in a series of landmark documentaries that began 42 years ago when UK-based Granada's World in Action team, inspired by the Jesuit maxim "Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man," interviewed a diverse group of seven-year-old children from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Michael Apted, a researcher for the original film, has returned to interview the "children" every seven years since, at ages 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and now again at age 49.In this latest chapter, more life-changing decisions are revealed, more shocking announcements made and more of the original group take part than ever before, speaking out on a variety of subjects including love, marriage, career, class and prejudice.

The "Up Series" has to go down as one of the most unique documentaries ever created. At a time where Britain's culture was rapidly changing in a post World War II era, the "Up Series" began with "Seven Up", where a group of children told the world their dreams and aspirations for the future. Over 49 years later, this dedicated series has continued to return every seven years to update the world on the lives of these individuals. It provides an absolutely captivating look at the highs and lows of humanity and gives us a glimpse of how a few years can completely change an individual. It's inspirational material, and in the words of Roger Ebert, a "noble use of the film medium".

This review also applies to Seven Up, 7 Plus Seven, 21 Up, 28 Up, 35 Up, and 42 Up. Possibly one of the most important cinematic experiences I've ever had. I caught up with the series a few years ago when 49 Up was released and came out on DVD. A perfect ethnographic look at these dozen people born and raised in England, who we follow their lives every 7 years as they grow up. I am now completely invested in these people and want 2013 to come as soon as possible, just so we can get an update on these beloved people, not characters. These films are guaranteed to break your heart. It's also a study on what it means to document people and how methods of observation change the very subjects you are attempting to study. I can vouch for the fact that this series is a true ethnography, NOT anthropology, yet its methods are anthropologically correct.

I loved the whole series of these documentaries...

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in sociology, psychology, cultural studies, or class/political issues. I have to admit, Apted comes off as a pretty pompous fellow in the Ebert interview... but Ebert's respect for the genius of this documentary idea kinda makes up for it.

A fascinating look at life. I don't know how much distortion the documentation process causes, but the stories of this group of individuals pushes through time and time - sad, tragic, inspiring. This time around I found a theme of middle age contentment - one of the more optimistic editions of this series.

Highly recommended for you
